GARDEN ROUTE NEWS - Keen birders and those interested in pursuing this fascinating pastime are urged not to miss out on the next birding experience of the SANParks Honorary Rangers.
Unfortunately, the next event is only in December 2018, but the early bird catches the worm - no pun intended!
The SANParks Honorary Rangers: Wilderness region, hosted their annual birding experience during the summer holidays at the Wilderness National Park.
The event was attended by an enthusiastic 68 adults and 36 children.
"It is an excellent experience and I will recommend anybody to attend. I will definitely be back next year," Ingrid Vis from George reflected.
Outings were led by birding experts and professional guides to the Pied Kingfisher trail Rondevlei bird hide and Reflections Eco-Reserve farm, owned by Tim Carr.
Over the two-day event, a total of 100 waterside and forest birds were seen, inclusive of 40 at Pied Kingfisher, 39 at the Reflections Eco Reserve farm and also about 21 at Ebb & Flow.
Of the elusive 14 birds seen, were the Cape grassbird, southern boubou, black-bellied starling and the olive bush shrike.
The informative talks on how to identify local birds in the Wilderness Region included a display of photographs and museum specimens of birds.
The talks drew young and old to explore the world of birds through the eyes of Peter Ginn, a birding expert and photographer (of more than 450 bird species).
He is also the well-known author of the new book,
The Ultimate Companion for Birding in South Africa, covering 960 species known to occur in Southern Africa.
Children thoroughly enjoyed the fun event, Know your local birds' colouring-in fun, which also afforded some bonding time between grandparents and the young.
