GARDEN ROUTE NEWS - Youth from all over the Garden Route District congregated on 26 March at the D'Almeida community hall to engage in talks on crime and safety. The Youth Against Crime Summit was hosted by die Da Gamaskop Police Cluster.
According to Brigadier Phumzile Cetyana, the initiative started as an intervention to create a paradigm shift among the youth.
"We want them to think safety, to look at it seriously and to contribute to a safer society."
The youth were divided into seven groups and Cetyana said that their feedback on the topics discussed will be compiled into a working document to draft the way forward.
Topics discussed included how crime affects the youth, what the root causes of it is, the impact of social media and gender based violence on crime among the youth, which sustainably interventions can be implemented to curb crim and who needs to be involved.
The focus group for the summit was those aged 18 to 35.

Cetyana commented that gangsterism is among the top concerns regarding criminal activity affecting the youth in the district.
