MOSSEL BAY NEWS - The municipality has closely been monitoring the levels of the dams supplying potable water to the area for some time.
The dam levels are fast approaching the critical 50% levels. Once the 50% level is reached, the municipality will be required to implement water restrictions.
The municipality anticipates that water restrictions will be implemented as of 1 November.
Residents are invited to visit the municipal website, www.mosselbay.gov.za/water-restrictions-2019-effective-1-november-2019 for details regarding the restrictions and applicable tariffs.
The approved water consumption tariffs when the dam water level is below 50% will apply from the date when the dam levels drop to below 50%. All consumption charges on water tariffs will increase by 50% as of that date. However, the basic charges will remain the same.
Important to note
The municipality will not read all meters on the date of implementation. As with the normal tariff change at the beginning of each financial year, consumption between the reading dates before and after this implementation date will be used and prorated to calculate the billing based on the approved tariffs.
Reminder
The municipality reminds residents that the effects of the current absence of good rainfall in the water catchment areas that feed the dams, cannot be underestimated and that the emergency water restriction measures are being implemented only out of necessity.
In order to ease the pressure placed on water supplies, municipalities across the province will continue to implement restrictions for the foreseeable future. The use of the restrictions and higher tariffs on water consumption are intended to encourage residents to use only what they need.
The municipality is committed to ensuring that residents of Mossel Bay continue to receive a sufficient supply of water, even though it will be restricted. The co-operation of residents would be highly appreciated.
