MOSSEL BAY NEWS - The third girl in the overdose incident reported on in the Mossel Bay Advertiser last week, is still in hospital.
The incident reported on, in which three girls were found drugged on Saturday, 3 August, is not school related, says the Western Cape Education Department.
A 13-year-old girl died in a Mossel Bay hospital on Sunday, 4 August, after she and two of her friends, reportedly the same age, took an overdose of medication.
The incident took place on the Saturday evening at the family home of the girl who later died.
According to information, the girls were taken to hospital after after they were found drugged. The two other girls were transferred to the George Provincial Hospital after their condition deteriorated.
Last week, one of the girls was discharged from hospital and returned to school. At the time of going to print, the police reported that the third girl was still in hospital. According to the police, the girls all attended the same school in JCC in Mossel Bay.
"Out of respect for the learners concerned, and given that it is not school related, I cannot disclose the name of the school(s). Counselling has been provided to learners of the school(s). The WCED can confirm that three learners were reportedly involved, with one learner sadly having passed away. Our condolences go to the family, friends and school community," Bronagh Hammond, director of communications at the WCED said, upon enquiry.
