MOSSEL BAY NEWS AND VIDEO - Speed painter Trey Smith and hip hop artist Robert Smalls provided a "not seen before" stage highlight at the Soul Festival during their first-time collaboration.
Without a rehearsal, and meeting in person for the first time before their performance at the Comedy Lunch Hour, the two artists were given a brief to try to capture the spirit of the festival - the festival being all about "soul".
"In my life I lost a lot through not being focused on the right things, through not being sober. I gave away my power. The song I wrote for this event is about the fact that there is no time to not be focused," says Smalls.
Smith and Smalls shared a few thoughts via WhatsApp. "With the father holding up the child, I tried to speak to the more mature people, those who have children.
"The songs mentions 'focus' and 'hold up'. Many people focus on the wrong things, instead of 'holding up' the future.
The painting addresses that. I want to challenge Mossel Bay and the whole of South Africa to 'hold up' the future," Smith said.
Smith's painting was completed in just less than three minutes, the duration of the song.
