The teams passed Mossel Bay en route from Knysna to Swellendam on Friday 3 October.
Delft University's Nuon Solar Team from the Netherlands won the competition with an impressive total distance of 4 227.8km, nearly 1 500km more than their closest competitor. They also broke the record for the furthest distance covered in a single day when they covered a daily distance of 601km on day two of the event.
The first South African team to take honours was Team UKZN in third place with a distance of 2 418.3km covered. The team also broke the record for the furthest distance travelled and the furthest distance covered in a single day by a South African team.
Following closely in fourth position was North West University with a total distance of 2360.6km travelled. The University of Johannesburg team came fifth and received the techno-logy and innovation award. In second place was the Anadolu Solar Team from Turkey with a total distance of 2 733.1km.
Held every two years, the event is endorsed by Motorsport SA and the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile, with the aim of promoting alternative energy sources.
