MOSSEL BAY NEWS - The Mossel Bay Municipality is busy correcting a sewer problem that has resulted from a house that has been built directly over a main sewer line.
An obstruction formed in the sewer line directly under the dwelling, making it impossible to repair or replace the damaged sewer pipeline by using conventional means.
"The municipality is now constructing a manhole to create a point where sewage may be mechanically removed from the blocked sewer pipe.
"As several attempts to repair the sewer problem in Mabolo Street and Makhubalo Street have failed to deliver the desired result, the sewerage now has to be removed by using a vacuum truck. It is anticipated that the construction of a manhole will be finished in the course of this week, whereafter the sewage will be removed mechanically on a regular basis to minimise spillages around the houses," the municipal spokesperson, Mr Colin Puren said.
Furthermore, it would seem that no planning approval was given for the home that was built over the sewer line.
Councillor Niklaas Booisen and the Manager (Water and Sanitation) Eric Louw inspect the work being done to resolve problems with a blocked sewer line.
Despite several attempts, the blockage cannot be dislodged.
Even a pipe cracking specialist has indicated an unwillingness to even attempt pipe cracking due to the type of sewer pipe involved.
Sewage has spilled into the yards of dwellings in the area, and the affected area was cleaned and disinfected by municipal employees.
Mossel Bay's executive town councillors Niklaas Booisen and Anton Dellemijn recently visited the area to inspect the work being done to solve the problem.
