MOSSEL BAY NEWS - Members of the community recently asked about what seem to be security personnel at the N2 on-ramp near Dana Bay, outside Mossel Bay.
South African National Roads Agency Limited (SANRAL) western region manager, Randall Cable, said that following a fatal crash last year in which a bus took a wrong turn on to the on-ramp, resulting in fatalities and people being injured, SANRAL had taken significant steps to increase road safety measures at the turn-off.
"Directional signage was repeatedly replaced, following blatant theft and vandalism of road signs.
"As a short-term intervention, in the context of repeated theft, security officers were placed at the interchange, to safeguard the signage."
Cable said while more than R400 000 has been spent on replacing and securing signage, this cannot be compared to the cost of even one life lost.
"As part of a more long-term solution, the off-ramp was recently redesigned to prohibit traffic turning on to the on-ramp.
"Permanent overhead gantries, with a more robust mounting system, have been designed in an attempt to counter theft of the signs mounted in the ground.
"The long-term solution will come in at an estimated cost of R5m.
"These will be installed as part of the N2 road maintenance project which is currently under way."
