MOSSEL BAY NEWS - The house at the Point in Mossel Bay, which was on the market for R39 million - the most ever asked for a home in the area - has been sold, for the price asked.
The property used to be a bungalow and was built on a former rubbish dump, which was considered to be outside of the town in the 1930s.
Hartenbos Property Group and Point Village Accommodation signed a dual mandate with the former home owner in April. They confirmed this week to the Mossel Bay Advertiser that the property had been registered in the new owner's name and had been sold for R39 million.
Real estate practitioner Bobby van Schalkwyk confirmed that a South African bought the property and will use it as a holiday home.
He said the new home owner wished to remain anonymous.
Van Schalkwyk said it was a unique house to sell. "You can't compare it to other properties in the area. It is not the type of property, for which you would get a prospective buyer waiting around every corner."
The house was bought in what is now known as Point Village, in 1975.
The area was a collection of broken-down wooden structures, owned mostly by people from Oudtshoorn, who came to the coast to escape the summer heat.
It was regarded as a campsite and in those years houses were put up at the beginning of the summer and torn down as the autumn approached.
The house was rebuilt in 1981, again in 1999 and revamped most recently in 2018.
It is more or less on the same footprint as the original house.
