MOSSEL BAY NEWS - It was brought to the attention of the Mossel Bay Advertiser by several members of the public that the public ablutions at the former yacht club building in the harbour could do with some repairs and that the parking area in front of the building and the road leading to it are in disrepair.
The building and surrounds are owned by Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA).
The Advertiser sent this enquiry to TNPA: "Does TNPA have any plans to upgrade the former yacht club building and the parking area at the yacht club and road leading to the yacht club? The road is almost non-existent. It is like gravel, not tar, it has disintegrated so much.
"Also, the showers and toilets downstairs are in need of repairs. There are some sort of repairs taking place near the restaurants at the harbour, but nothing at the yacht club.
"Private companies are located in the old yacht club building. Are they renting from the tenant of the building? Is he sub-letting to them?
"Has the tenant of the former yacht club building been given notice to move out because of his millions of rands in rent arrears?"
The former yacht club building and its surrounds are in a poor state of repair.
The Advertiser received this response from TNPA:
"The Port of Mossel Bay will consider the development of the recreational area and adjacent sites when we embark on the greater waterfront development project and have an approved Port Development Framework Plan (PDFP) as per the dictates of the National Ports Act.
"With regard to the maintenance and repairs on any leased area or premises within port limits, and the costs relating thereto, these are for the account and responsibility of the tenant during their lease period.
"As previously communicated in a statement issued on 14 June 2021 to the Mossel Bay Advertiser, we re-iterate that the contractual considerations relative to the current leased area under consideration are sub judice. The matter is the subject of a formal legal process.
''The provision and use of all port facilities and port land is subject to the provisions of the National Ports Act (Act No. 12 of 2005)."
