MOSSEL BAY NEWS - Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) at the Port of Mossel Bay heeded the global call to mark Nelson Mandela International Day by devoting at least 67 minutes of time to helping others.
A 40-strong team of volunteers from the port observed the day at Aloe Crèche in the small farming community of Buisplaas, about 30km from Mossel Bay.
Acting port manager, Captain Vania Cloete says: "It was a fun-filled day with lots of passion and love dedicated to the children. TNPA strives to remain true to the memory of Tata Mandela and his legacy of devoting this day to the service of humanity."
The creche's current building was donated by the Department of Agriculture after the old venue, a local community church, burnt down some time ago.
The crèche has two teachers who are paid by Child Welfare. It takes takes care of 20 children.
For 2017 the Port of Mossel Bay donated study material, had a soup kitchen for the community, redecorated the crèche, renovated the play area, installed a dry wall to section off a classroom for potty training, fixed the ablution facilities as only one toilet had been working, and fixed the electrical lighting within the classrooms, among other repairs.
Mossel Bay executive mayor, Alderman Harry Levendal, acting port manager Captain Vania Cloete and TNPA employees handing over stationery at Aloe Crèche.
