MOSSEL BAY NEWS - Amid complaints from the community about a premises in Joe Slovo where crime is perpetuated, the Da Gamaskop Police, with the help of committed neighbourhood watch members, are making inroads in the fight against crime.
Last week the Mossel Bay Advertiser reported on a premises, D4 Ntaka Street, that has been labelled by the community as a "danger" and an "unsafe" zone. A community member told the Advertiser it is a well-known "hideaway for criminals".
Comment on the situation was obtained from the Da Gamaskop Police, in whose jurisdiction the property lies.
"We are aware of the situation and also that the property is in an area where illegal drug dealing is taking place.
"We are in the process of liaising with the ward councillor to see if the property can either be sold or, better, demolished. We are also busy with crime intervention operations in the area," says Capt Wollie Fourie, spokesperson of the Da Gamaskop Police.
Capt Fourie also reported that the Sector 1 commander, Sgt Ludumo Dyasi, along with the Valley Neighbourhood Watch, apprehended a suspect in possession of drugs and cash during a recent operation. The suspect was taken into custody and appeared in the Mossel Bay Magsitrate's Court.
Station Commander of the Da Gamaskop Police, Col Mark Hartzenberg commended the neighbourhood watch for its hard work and commitment in the fight against crime.
