MOSSEL BAY NEWS - Point High School put on a stellar musical, titled Goodbye & Hallo, this week.
The only disappointment was that the show ran for two nights only and it was not recorded on CD so more people will not have the opportunity to enjoy it.
The matrics start their trial exams on Monday, 4 September, and must study so another night was not possible.
Annemarie Jordaan, responsible for the script, said: "If you put a show on a CD, people can copy it. But, we can do more shows and this is a taste of what is to come."
Some of the remarks after the show included: "I cannot believe the high level of talent" and "The standard was far higher than that of a school production."
The singing - both solo and in groups - was excellent. The dances were well choreographed. The show was tremendously varied.
It followed the path of one Paul Kruger (18), who grew up in Pretoria. Although he was a bright learner and certain of an academic future, Paul is uncertain which path to follow and takes a gap year after school and tours the world. The various scenes of the musical deal with the different countries Paul visits.
Simple backdrops of photographs of various cities or indoor settings were projected on to the white wall behind the stage. What a great idea. This meant no time-consuming set painting or elaborate drops or props, which would have had to be moved around.
A number of the learners really stood out, with beautiful, unique voices and a captivating stage presence. Highlights of the show included the rendition of John Denver's Leaving on a jet plane,
Ed Sheeran's Thinking out loud, an extraordinarily good Barcelona (Freddie Mercury and Montserrat Caballé), the Four Tenors ensemble and a gutsy Diamonds are forever (Shirley Bassey) rendition.
It is really hard to single out highlights because the production was truly a delight. The music was well chosen - a combination of old and new - and the costumes pleasing.
There were snippets of acting and speech that hit the high notes, such as the gangster scene in Haarlem, New York, and the two traditionally dressed ladies who discussed the cultural diversity of South Africa.
