GARDEN ROUTE | HESSEQUA |KAROO NEWS - Sassa disability beneficiaries have been waiting for months to be assessed by a doctor, just to find out now that it will not be done. Shivani Wahab, the communications manager of Sassa Western Cape, confirmed that medical assessments for disability grant applications have not been processed since the start of the national lockdown.
“As per the announcement by the Sassa CEO and per Sassa National Directive on Disability Grant applications, no new medical appointments for this grant type will be processed until November 2020.”
Martin Maas from George contacted George Herald on Monday after he received the disappointing news. “I went to Conville Clinic to pick up my chronic medication when I mentioned to the staff that I’ll see them soon. That’s when I was told that all doctor’s appointments have been cancelled.”
Maas says he has not received his grant since January, and has had to depend on his family to support him. “It is frustrating, to say the least, to have already been waiting for four months, just to be told I won’t be able to be assessed till November.”
Wahab said clients who have already applied for a disability grant and whose medical assessment has already been done, will be contacted to set up an appointment to register the application.
“We would like to request clients to alternatively apply for the SRD Covid-19 grant which is effective from May till June 2020.”
Applicants should take note that the grant application channel is completely automated and no applications are processed at any Sassa local office. All social grant enquiries are managed via the Sassa Call Centre (0800 60 10 11) or 021 4690235 and not at any local office.
