MOSSEL BAY NEWS - Without realising the guiding hand of her Maker, artist Sandra Upton fell in love with Nguni cattle when asked to do a painting of one in 2018.
Cattle have co-existed with man since the beginning.
The Bible has linked the image of man leading his favourite ox to eat with Yahweh stooping down to feed Israel in Hosea 11:4.
Also, in His care for all nations Yahweh asks Jonah: “And should not I spare Nineveh, that great city, wherein are more than six score thousand persons ... and also much cattle?” (Jonah 4:11 - KJV)
Sandra says: “The San Naledi Art project is to let you experience the light of God. I hope you who are looking at these paintings will seek the light of God in your heart.”
The meaning of Naledi in Setswana is “star” and the light the star is setting free.
It is said the Nguni’s eyes also have light; it is a glimmer of hope.
Every painting has an encouraging message.
The first painting in this project, a drinking scene viewed from above, became the 2020 winner of the Vyftalente Art Competition and posed quite a challenge while in the making. Being at her wits end with refining the water hues and texture, Sandra found new source and grasp while listening to the well-known Christian song, Oceans (Hillsong).
View these paintings at the San Naledi Gallery, Hartenbos Seefront.
