MOSSEL BAY NEWS and VIDEO - Ever mindful of personal safety, staff at the Mossel Bay Advertiser made a proactive move to learn more about self defence last week.
Last Friday, instructors from the Tiger Kai fitness and training academy, Philip and Marulin Goodger gave an insightful talk to and demonstration for the staff at the Advertiser's offices.
Philip Goodger explained the colour codes of combat psychology and how the body reacts when under attack.
During the demonstration, Goodger presented Krav Maga techniques.
This unarmed, close contact fighting system originates from the Israeli Defence Force.
Consisting of quick counterattacks and offensive techniques, it is the ideal system for unexpected and dangerous violent attacks. Goodger explained that his system teaches the ability to evaluate a situation, the threat level and the appropriate response.
"Training is designed for and practised in real life situations, so that if you find yourself in a life threatening situation, you can react without hesitation."
The crime situation in South Africa has not left the Advertiser staff unscathed. Some time ago, the editor was in an altercation with an intruder at her flat. Earlier this year, a journalist was robbed of her camera, smartphone and purse at knifepoint on Louis Fourie Road. During the talk and demonstration, these incidents as well as the possible action to take in these circumstances, were discussed.
Goodger also discussed general safety awareness and emphasised the need to always be vigilant.
