MOSSEL BAY NEWS - Work on the road linking Grunter and Louis Fourie roads is progressing well, the MEC of Finance, Minister Ivan Meyer, was told when he conducted an oversight visit to Mossel Bay this past week.
The minister was appraised of the housing project that will be developed along the Louis Fourie Corridor. The new road will be instrumental in improving accessibility for the housing development that eventually will comprise 1 100 homes aimed predominantly to accommodate current backyard dwellers.
The minister was happy to learn that the municipality has planned for an extensive greening project to complete the housing development.
"With 1 100 families moving here soon, it will be important that the name of the development reflects hope. This is the kind of project I will report on in Cabinet," Dr Meyer said. The road project comprises a link to connect Bill Jeffery Road with Louis Fourie Road. This will reduce the traffic volumes at the two nearby intersections - at Mayixhale Road and at Mossel Street.
The new road will consist of two lanes of 3.4 metres, 250 metres long. The final black, top layer will consist of 40mm-deep asphalt, with the sidewalks also covered in asphalt. In future the traffic signals at the intersection with Louis Fourie Road will also be upgraded.

The existing stormwater line is to be rerouted and upgraded to a 900mm diameter pipeline. The project was somewhat complicated by the existing bulk infrastructure that had to be removed or relocated. Both a 450mm water main line and a 200mm water line had to be relocated, as well as the existing overhead power line.
The project cost approximately R10,5m and construction took 28 weeks. Work on the road is expected to be finalised by mid-August.
