MOSSEL BAY NEWS - Mossel Bay Municipality is to support the functioning of the Mossel Bay Sports Council financially and in other ways.
This was decided at the monthly council meeting on Thursday, 25 April.
Council approved the recommendation that R40 000 be paid to the Mossel Bay Sports Council (MBSC) by June 7 for the 2018/2019 financial year, and that R120 000 be budgeted for for the 2019/2020 financial year, with an amount of R10 000 to be paid monthly to the MBSC.
This amount will be adjusted annually in line with the percentage increase of the municipal operational budget.
The MBSC will be mandated to use the funds for banking and other administrative costs, for hosting the annual Mossel Bay Sports Awards, and for promoting sport and assisting with sport development in the greater Mossel Bay area.
The MBSC will also assist all sporting codes with the drafting of their constitutions, and with applications for funding and sponsorships as well as other administrative functions as required.
Council also approved the recommendation that the municipality and specifically the sport and recreation section and community development section encourage the various sporting codes to affiliate with the MBSC.
The municipality will only assist sporting codes with letters of support for funding applications once a letter of support has been given to the sporting code by the MBSC.
To obtain such letters, sporting codes will have to be fully paid-up members of the MBSC.
The town hall will be provided free of charge for the annual Mossel Bay Sport Awards with only the refundable deposit being required.
The regional chairman of the ANC, Councillor Jovan Bruinders, objected to the stipulation that the executive mayor and municipal manager be delegated to nominate councillors and officials respectively to serve on the MBSC, arguing that the full council should be the only authority to authorise delegates.
The ACDP representative, Councillor Jeanette Gouws, queried the cost of affiliation, and urged that the MBSC should be free of political influence or interference. "Sporting codes should be free of any political affiliation and the sports council should not be allowed to be used as a political tool," Gouws insisted.
The MBSC will be required to submit a monthly report to council.
