MOSSEL BAY NEWS - Latest information on the Haelkraal and Albertinia fires:
Haelkraal | Paardebond fire:
Late yesterday afternoon Mr. Bouwer was dispatched to the Paardebond | Haelkraal fire to set up a Forward Control Point (FCP). The purpose of a FCP is to provide the municipality with information from a central point from where activities on this fire can be coordinated.
The Paardebond fire is still very active, some sections of the Geelhoutvlei timber plantation have been affected by the fire.
Teams from Mossel Bay LM, WoF, Cape Nature the SCFPA, Eden DM as well as the landowners worked through the night to contain the fire. Unfortunately the hot temperatures predicted for today will pose a challenge for firefighters in their battle to contain the fire.
Albertinia fire:
At about 23:00 last night Mr. Stoffels (Eden firefighter) reported that at Albertinia there are about 5 to 7 active fire lines. The fire moved over the mountain to the Karoo area (heading towards the Van Wyksdorp area).
10 people from the Eden Fire and rescue service has been working at this fire for the last 72 hours.
Planned actions for today:
Mr. Johan Brand will be dispatched to Albertinia to take over the command at this fire.
Mr. Deon Stoffels and Deon van Wyk (Deputy Fire Chief) have been dispatched to the Paardebond / Haelkraal fire to provide assistance to the IMT. At about 10:00 Mr. Freddie Thaver (Eden DM Fire Chief) will do a reconnaissance flight over both these fires to do a summary of the potential high-risk areas in order to guide ground teams.
