In Autumn every year, German children do their lantern march, singing inspirational songs as they go.
The local march was held on Friday, 3 August, bearing the theme 'Hearts and lights for children'. It was held to show that by giving more love and time to children, the community of Mossel Bay can only benefit, by helping them become confident and happy young people. The lanterns used were purchased and sent especially from Hannover in Germany.
The Mossel Bay Community Band led the march, consisting of around 150 children, parents and grandparents, on their walk. Traffic around the usually busy Point literally came to a standstill as people watched the marching line weave their way through the darkness, bearing their lanterns as signs of hope.
"It was simply a wonderful experience," says Yolandi Lombard, President of the Rotary Club of Mossel Bay.
"The Rotary Club of Mossel Bay would like to thank everyone who bought a lantern. The funds raised has come at a most necessary time."
Based on the feedback after the event, chances of this becoming an annual event is already getting consideration. Nata Dreijer would like to especially thank the following people and organisations: Albert Wiffen, Varta, the Mossel Bay Community Band, Mossel Bay Pharmacy, Stars Restaurant, Mr Williamson from the municipal traffic department, Gail from CP Nel, Christine van Rensburg and other members of the Rotary Club of Mossel Bay.
