Update
MOSSEL BAY NEWS - The extension to Grunter Road, the carriageway that now links Bill Jeffery Road with Louis Fourie Road, was officially opened to traffic on Thursday, 23 August.
This road will reduce the traffic volumes at the two nearby intersections - at Mayixhale Road and at Mossel Street - and will eventually unlock the housing development of 1 100 homes planned for the Louis Fourie Corridor.
Speaking at the official opening, Mossel Bay executive mayor, Alderman Harry Levendal, expressed his gratitude to André Delport of SMEC Consulting Engineers for completing the project approximately ten days ahead of schedule.
He also lauded the work of Bruce Blacklaws of the contractors, Entsha Henra, and subcontractor Roland Appels of MTDJ Projects.
The new road consist of two lanes of 3.4 metres, 250 metres long.
The final black, top layer consists of 40mm-deep asphalt, with the sidewalks also covered in asphalt. Traffic signals at the intersection with Louis Fourie Road were upgraded specifically for this intersection.
The project was somewhat complicated as the existing bulk infrastructure below the ground had to be removed or relocated.
It is official: Grunter Road, leading from Louis Fourie Road to Bill Jeffery Road, is open to traffic. The executive mayor, Alderman Harry Levendal, declared the road open on Thursday, 23 August.
An existing stormwater line had to be rerouted and upgraded to a 900mm diameter pipeline and an electrical substation had to be relocated. Both a 450mm water main line and a 200mm water line had to be relocated, as well as the existing overhead power line.
"Yet, despite these challenges, the team was able to deliver ahead of schedule and we thank them for a job well done," Alderman Levendal said.
The project cost approximately R10,5m.
First to use the new road was Tozama Mamase of KwaNonqaba and her passengers. She said she enthusiastically waved at the mayor from the opposite side of Grunter Road to catch his attention before gathering the courage to travel on the new road.
