MOSSEL BAY NEWS - Mossel Bay Municipality has started to remove the invasive trees along Louis Fourie Road.
Residents will notice teams of workers removing Port Jackson willow, black wattle and rooikrans trees along Louis Fourie Road on the Heiderand side of the road, between the Schoeman Street crossing and the Casino Road traffic intersection.
Members of a neighbourhood watch group recently removed alien growth along this stretch of road to prevent the trees being used for hiding by criminals.
However, new, young trees have sprouted and again reports are being received of incidents in which women, especially, walking along Louis Fourie Road are targeted for their valuables.
Considering the municipality's intensified focus on community safety, the municipal manager, Advocate Thys Giliomee, in consultation with the Mayoral Committee, instructed that the invasive growth be removed.
Pedestrians are warned to be alert and preferably not to walk with their cellphones in their hands. After dark, the cellphone light can be seen, even through a shirt or pants pocket.
