MOSSEL BAY NEWS - The executive mayor of Mossel Bay, Alderman Harry Levendal, reminded guests at the launch of the new housing development along Louis Fourie this week of the successes the municipality has achieved in providing housing throughout the greater Mossel Bay area.
Alderman Levendal thanked the MEC of Housing in the Western Cape, Minister Bonginkosi Madikizela for his support in the past ten years that has contributed to considerably alleviating the dire need for housing. "Council on Friday [12 April] approved the tenders for two housing projects, namely the construction of 258 top structures at Asazani and Izinyoka. The tender of R42 191 775, including VAT was awarded to Marnol Projects, subject to the actual scope of work to be negotiated with the municipality," the mayor said.
Another tender, for R37 534 005.03, was awarded for the construction of platforms and civil services for 150 erven and the building of 96 Breaking New Ground houses and 27 toilets for enhanced serviced sites at Sonskynvallei.
Upgrading
The municipality has embarked on a project to upgrade the existing 23 informal settlements over a seven- to eight-year period. The provision of interim services will commence soon, with R350 million to be spent on the project eventually.
Completed projects
Mayor Levendal acknowledged the support the municipality received from the Western Cape Housing Department over a period of ten years. "This resulted in a multitude of housing projects having been completed. Most notable, but not exclusively, are the following projects:
• Wolwedans - 647 opportunities at an estimated cost of R85 million.
• Friemersheim - 190 opportunities at an estimated cost of R24 million
• Asazani Isinyoka Phase 3 and 4 258 opportunities at an estimated cost of R43 million, with some of the work still in process.
• New Rest - 338 serviced sites at an estimated cost of R43 million, with some of the work still in progress.
• KwaNonqaba PHP - 170 opportunities at an estimated cost of R20 million.
• Elangeni - 48 opportunities at an estimated cost of R5.7 million.
• Sonskynvallei - rectification of 200 existing structures at a cost of R6.4 million.
• Sonskynvallei Phase II - 152 opportunities at an estimated cost of R24 million.
• Herbertsdale - 154 opportunities at an estimated cost of R24 million.
• Tarka - six emergency houses at a cost of R850 000.
• Access to basic services project in informal settlements at an estimated cost of R11 million.
• Civic/Highway Park - 31 opportunities at an estimated cost of R3.7 million.
• Several smaller enhancement projects funded by the Western Cape Department of Human Settlements, such as the toilet project for the elderly and disabled - 130 opportunities at an estimated cost of R3.25 million.
