MOSSEL BAY NEWS - Locals might have spotted a dredger boat operating in the port this week.
According to Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) this particular dredger boat differs from the ones normally used, as it is a grab dredger.
Grab dredgers are also called clam shells. The cutting tool of these dredgers is a grab which consists of wire operated in two half shells.
These half shells, after filling with dredged material, load the material in barges.
The grab is mounted either on a drag line or hydraulic excavator.
Grabs are efficient in removing material
in corners of the dock and basins and
also make excavation closer to quay walls easier.
The grab dredge will be in operation for the next two weeks.
According to a TNPA spokersperson, it is the first time in 20 years that this particular dredger is in operation in the port.
The dredging process is more thorough although more costly with a grab dredger, the spokesperson confirmed.
