MOSSEL BAY NEWS - Former ANC councillor Petrus (Peter) Lichaba passed away in the early morning hours of 26 May.
Lichaba also served as the chief whip during his term in council.
When Lichaba's passing was announced at the monthly municipal meeting last Thursday, Alderlady Venolea Fortuin said that Lichaba was a valued colleague who led the ANC caucus with dignity.
Former municipal speaker, Alderman Petru Terblanche, now a Garden Route Municipality councillor, lamented Lichaba's passing in a social media post. According to the post, Terblanche and Lichaba had a special bond.
Terblanche also wrote that he would miss Lichaba's hearty laugh.
Several comments on social media made by colleagues who served with Lichaba in council, indicated they had great respect and appreciation for him.
Throughout his term, Lichaba strove to defend the interest of the poor, not just in Ward 1 which he represented, but throughout Mossel Bay. He was always seeking to advance the vision of the ANC, which is the realisation of an equitable, united, non-racial and non-sexist society.
Family talks
Lichaba's sister, Ntabiseng shared a memorial letter prepared by the family with the Mossel Bay Advertiser.
"And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock, I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it," the letter reads, quoting the Bible.
It continues that Lichaba always adhered to principles and values and that this ensured that he never played the man, but the ball.
"You believe in straight talk although that may have created enemies on the way. However, you reconciled with that reality as you believed failure to do so would allow the gates of hell to prevail. You were indeed as solid as a rock in everything you touched."
The letter refers to Lichaba's unwavering passion and commitment in football, as a player and an official, which with his passing will leave a massive void in the football fraternity.
"As the family, nobody doubts or questions your love for all and sundry. There is nothing you would not do for your family. As the family we are very proud of your achievements both in sport and politics."
A memorial service was held for Lichaba at Isalathiso Primary School on Wednesday, 1 June.
He will be laid to rest following a service at the St Blaize Catholic Church at 09:00, tomorrow, Saturday 4 June, at 09:00.
