MOSSEL BAY NEWS - Following almost two years without the traditional anniversary celebrations at the Bartolomeu Dias Museum due to Covid-19, there is reason to be happy: the museum is once again free to host its birthday celebrations next week.
The highlight of the celebrations, which for the past couple of years coincided with the Dias Festival, is the cutting and eating of the door-sized cake, created especially for these special occasions.
Year after year, the cake is made according to a specific theme, which remains a surprise until the last minute.
Reserve your spot
Next Thursday, 3 February at 10:00, guests will be able to visit the museum for the celebration of its 33rd birthday.
The cake cutting ceremony starts at 10:00. The dress code is smart casual or cultural dress.
Book your spot on or before Wednesday, 2 February, by no later than 16:00. Call 044 691 1067 to reserve your seat or send an email to info@diasmuseum.co.za.
Redevelopment
Amid talk of change coming to the museum, head of communications for the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport, Tania Colyn, confirmed that this entails an enhancement of the exhibitions to offer a new experience to visitors.
"There are currently two new developments planned at the museum – one is an exhibition transformation project which will enhance visitor experience through new exhibitions and the other is an upgrade to the existing infrastructure of the museum," Colyn told the Mossel Bay Advertiser this week.
She added that the projects would not involve any museum closures.
"The infrastructure upgrade might just mean that certain areas in the museum would have restricted access while work is taking place but visitors would still be able to go into the museum. The museum will share more information as it is able to and as the project progresses," Colyn concluded.
The huge cake created one year for a Bartolomeu Dias Museum anniversary celebration.
