It is a platform for students to experiment with business ideas. The practical experience of developing and pitching a business case for products or services with expert feedback facilitates entrepreneurial learning for all participating students.
Dr Tercia Terblanche, South Cape TVET College principal, together with a dedicated group of staff and in partnership with various sponsors, embraces the idea of fostering entrepreneurial mindsets among students who wish to make a change in South Africa and create opportunities for the unemployed youth via self-employment opportunities.
Whether students ultimately choose employment or self-employment as their chosen career path, having an entrepreneurial mindset is crucial in the continually changing economic environment of the 21st century, the college noted in a media release.
Out of a record of 48 applications, 18 contestants were invited to participate in the competition. Entrepreneurship competitions such as this require participants to demonstrate creativity, determination and business savvy. The independent panel of judges, who have an eye for potential SMMEs, evaluated each idea presented at the competition.
'Be bold'
Bongiwe Beja-Ntsiko, the acting vice-president: Partnership for Africa and Head of Partnerships of the Student Hub delivered the keynote address and inspired everyone to be bold enough to believe that we are the generation that will live to see Africa develop.
Roxzane Hael, a student at the South Cape College Oudtshoorn campus, took first place with her business idea, Kiini, which would produce organic hair care products for naturally curly hair at affordable prices.
Kiini is a Swahili word meaning "essence". Roxzane wants people with natural hair to embrace their essence.
Siphosethu Xipula from Bitou campus was the runner-up with her business idea of Siyalibona Cleaning Supplies, producing and selling a natural multi-purpose cleaner.
Eudene Harris from the Mossel Bay campus came third with EH Door to Door, a delivery service of chronic medicine.
The success of the competition would not have been possible without the generous contributions of the sponsors. South Cape TVET College thanked each one for investing not only in the students, but the vision of student entrepreneurship.
