MOSSEL BAY NEWS - At a recent diversity workshop held by the Disabled Persons of South Africa (DPSA) at the D'Almeida Civic Centre, the message was one of inclusion and acceptance.
Organised by the DPSA chairman of development, Patrick Saayman, attendees were treated to an insightful lecture by Susana Spires, the programme director of the organisation, which highlighted the importance of diversity in creating a more accepting and open society.
While one often thinks of diversity as inclusivity relating only to race and gender, Spires emphasised that disability and socioeconomic status are also important factors to consider when attempting to create a more diverse society.
During her lecture, Spires urged her audience members to step back and evaluate the degree of diversity present in their own social circles and work spaces.
She stressed that having knowledge of and respect for other cultures, races, and languages, allows one to gain insight into the hardships that others face and how they influences their outlook on life.
It is important not to just tolerate people who are different from yourself, but also to accept and embrace the differences that make us unique. In this way, our rainbow nation becomes a stronger and more beautiful place to live in.
