MOSSEL BAY NEWS - The Sheriff of the Coast, Antonio da Silva-Swart and his lastest coastal clean-up convert from Mossel Bay, local hiker and adventurer Kosie Gericke, set off again last weekend to complete their journey towards Plettenberg Bay that was interrupted last month due to Da Silva-Swart's trouble with blistered feet.
Da Silva-Swart, who has been cleaning up the coast from Cape Point since June 2016, hiked to Mossel Bay in April and continued his quest in July with Gericke as his guide.
Da Silva-Swart arrived in Mossel Bay on Thursday, 24 August and the two men were scheduled to continue their coastal trek from Sedgefield on Friday.
Local businessman Johannes Bischoff sponsored fuel for their journey. "I am passionate about hiking and therefore also about keeping the beach clean," Bischoff told the Mossel Bay Advertiser.
Again, the pair suffered a setback as their vehicle broke down en route, but this didn't deter them long from completing their mission.
Da Silva-Swart's clean-up efforts are endorsed by CapeNature and Plastics SA.
Checkers is also a sponsor, providing him with camping equipment and consumables at the coastal clean-up projects, when the community is involved. At the end of each clean-up event, there is a cheerful boerewors braai, sponsored by Checkers. In some areas along the coast, these clean-up events happen on a monthly basis, which is what Da Silva-Swart aims at establishing.
Today, 1 September, in celebration of spring and to create awareness locally of clean-up operations, Kosie Gericke will be facilitating a coastal clean-up involving a local primary school. On Friday at 07:45, 96 Grade 2 learners from Park Primary will congregate in Bayview at the beach for the first local coastal clean-up of its kind. They will work towards Dias beach, where the clean-up will conclude at about 12:00.
