MOSSEL BAY NEWS - Mossel Bay Municipality celebrated another community safety milestone on 25 August with the launch of its first K9 unit vehicle, a press release from the municipality this week noted.
Funds for the establishment of the K9 unit were provided by the Provincial Department for Police Oversight and Community Safety. The funding serves to capacitate municipalities to grow their community safety portfolio.
Apart from the municipal manager, Colin Puren, members of the mayoral committee and municipal law enforcement and traffic services at the launch, the special guests for the day were the foundation phase learners of Milkwood Primary School.
The learners watched the revealing of the new vehicle in wonderment and had the delight of meeting the first canine member of the K9 unit, Mufasa.
Mufasa was donated to the unit in 2022 and has since been joined by Debbie, Wendy and Whiskey, all Belgian Malinois dogs.
The K9 unit has been trained in personal protection, as well as sniffing out narcotics, ammunition, and endangered species.
The unit has been deployed several times in collaboration with community safety partners, including the police and numerous successes in combating crime have been attributed to it in recent months, the municipality noted in the media release.
The K9 unit will be housed at the Garden Route SPCA.
