The municipality stated this in a media release on Wednesday, 10 August.
"As local government, the municipality is committed to be a caring organisation, taking into account those residents who desperately need financial assistance."

The media release noted: "The municipality has fine-tuned an indigent policy with its primary focus being poverty alleviation. With the new financial year that started in July, the policy has been reviewed and residents are invited to reapply for rebates and discounts available to them."
Who may apply
- Unemployed residents
- Low-income households (R0 – R7 940)
- Persons with disability (R0 – R7 940)
- Pensioners (R0 – R24 200)
The benefits
- Discounts of 30%-100% (depending on level of indigency) on basic fees and property rates.
- 6kl free water and up to 50 kWh free electricity.
- Benefits include rebates on refuse removal, sanitation, property rates, water and electricity.
Note: percentages differ depending on the indigent level applicants qualify for.
Include in your application
- Latest municipal account
- Proof of identity document for everyone older than 18 years
- Proof of income of total household income (payslips and/or bank statements)
- Sworn statement of unemployment, if applicable
- Medical certificate to confirm medical condition, in case of disability
- Note: Applicants must be permanent occupants.
