MOSSEL BAY NEWS - A By Grace EMS ambulance was involved in a motor accident today, Sunday, 7 November, while transporting a patient.
In a statement, By Grace CEO and owner Juan Barnard noted that at about 11:45 an ambulance was despatched to an unresponsive patient in Oliphant Street, Asla Park. The patient had multiple injuries due to assault and was left next to the road.
The ambulance crew suspected the patient sustained multiple head injuries which led to his unresponsiveness and started treating the patient immediately.
While transporting the patient to hospital the ambulance was in an accident at the corner of Louis Fourie Road and Schoeman Street, involving another vehicle.
Only minor injuries due to the accident were reported and all patients including the ambulance staff were transported to Life Bay View Hospital for further assessment and treatment.
Another By Grace EMS ambulance was despatched to transport the original patient to hospital in George for further care.
Barnard stated that upon following up at the hospital in George later in the afternoon it was ascertained that the patient had succumbed to his injuries caused by blunt force trauma to his head from the assault he had suffered and was declared dead. Neurological damage, known as brain death, was the cause, Barnard noted.
Barnard stated: "All authorities were on the scene and the case was handed over to Mossel Bay Police Station for further investigation," Barnard said.
The spot where the motor accident took place falls under the jurisdiction of Mossel Bay Police Station.
