MOSSEL BAY NEWS AND VIDEO - Since the Covid-19 virus has become an ever-growing reality in South Africa, local NPOs who pooled their efforts to alleviate the need among vulnerable communities in Mossel Bay, have moved mountains.
But still, an enormous task awaits them as Covid-19 continues to disrupt the lives of community members from all walks of life.
Working under the umbrella of Mossel Bay Covid-19 Donations, Supplies & Information, a group started on facebook, these NPOs have rolled up their sleeves to feed the hungry and provide care and support where most needed.
Their efforts to make a difference in the lives of the poor caught the attention of national news channels SABC and eNCA.
From the onset, the group administrators made it clear that their aim, ultimately, was to offer a sustainable service. “Mossel Bay Donations, Supplies &
Information’s main goals are food relief and getting people back at work as fast as possible in a socially obedient manner, where social distancing is a way of life.”
The group serves the local community from Dana Bay to as far as Glentana. “We have learnt that the need is not restricted to a particular neighbourhood. People all over are struggling. This is why we also want to bring about economic relief and uplift the livelihood of the community members.”

Since its inception, the group has received regular donations and generous support from the community at large. Distribution is aided by local companies, while others have offered storage space to receive and pack food parcels. On the facebook page - www.facebook.com/groups/MosselBayCovid19Fund/ - regular updates on the group’s movement are available as well as a handy, standardised list of what food parcels should contain.
The group, bearing in mind that social distancing is of primary importance to curb the spread of Covid-19, has committed to doing its part in educating the community. “During the past week, we have gone to cost and trouble to print material that will be used at our distribution points to make sure our beneficiaries abide by the regulations to curb the spread of the Coronavirus.”
Support and win
Reliant on donations, the Mossel Bay Donations, Supplies & Information group is constantly busy with fundraising efforts. It is currently running an attractive competition in which people can win a Nissan 370Z. Enter the draw by making a donation of R250. Only 2 500 participants will be in the draw to win.
“In light of our future plans to help fight the Coronavirus as well as the socio-economic issues caused by it, we beg the community to continue supporting us so we can continue bringing relief and aid, also in securing social distancing.” The Mossel Bay Covid-19 Fund also hopes to start a Masks4All Campaign now that the wearing of masks in public areas is compulsory as Level 4 of the national lockdown started on 1 May.
“We have outlined a comprehensive plan, involving other parties, for instance neighbourhood watch groups, to help us implement an initiative that will see to the community complying with wearing masks.”
