MOSSEL By NEWS - Local high school learners recently took part in the first round of a unique speech contest hosted by the Bartolomeu Dias Museum.
This year was the fourteenth consecutive year the museum organised the contest for high school learners taking English as a first additional language.
This first round of the event took place on 15 May and is used to select the best five learners Mossel Bay high schools to participate in the regional museum speech contest on 19 September. George, Beaufort West, and Dias museums each host their first rounds and select their finalists.
All of these finalists will then speak at the regional contest to decide who the best speaker of the Southern Cape/Karoo will be. The three best speakers will then be chosen to take part in the provincial contest at Worcester Museum in October.
The high schools that took part in the first round were Sao Bras, Curro Mossel Bay, Indwe, and Hillcrest. Lamè Roux from Curro Mossel Bay came in first place, with Athandiwe Makhaluza from Sao Bras taking second and Resha Sesethu from Indwe in third. The two runners-up with a reserve speaker, who also qualify for the regional contest are Mian Hurter from Curro in fourth place, Dimpo Gobongwana from Hillcrest in fifth, and Gabriella Jansen from Sao Bras in sixth.
Lamè Roux from Curro Mossel Bay, is a talented young speaker and excited for the opportunity to showcase her speaking skills and represent her school.
The museum said this initiative allows learners to develop and display their skills in research and public speaking. It also thanked the sponsors and staff who made the event possible.
