MOSSEL BAY NEWS - Nine of the Mossel Bay Yacht and Boat Club (MBYBC) junior members attended the South African Sailing Youth National Championships on the Vaal Dam in Gauteng.
The wind was fickle and the sailors had to get up at 05:00 in the morning to be on the water by 07:00 to use the morning breeze.
This strategy seemed to work and 11 races were sailed over the five-day event.
The sailors even experienced a Highveld storm, which came up in a flash, with lightning, rain and winds up to 35 knots.
All the boats made it back without major damage.
The RS Tera sailors competed in the open fleet and MBYBC's Ashley Layland finished second in the open fleet and the RS Tera Pro fleet.
The club's Jowayden Jacobus finished fourth in the open fleet and third in the RS Tera Pro fleet. Ruzaide Kannemeyer finished ninth, Oliver Holden 10th and Jesse Bull 24th in the open fleet.
In the 420 boat fleet the Mossel Bay team of Waydon Goliath and Bradon Kretzmann finished fourth and the team of Dovin Kannemeyer and James Bull, fifth.
Sailing coach Elfie Holden said: "The whole team learnt a lot from the experience and benefited from all the time on the water."
The championships took place from 14 to 21 December.
