MOSSEL BAY NEWS - Four youthful sailors of the Mossel Bay Yacht and Boat Club will be taking part in the World Topper Championships 2018 in Shenzhen, China from 16 to 21 August. They are leaving Mossel Bay on Sunday, 12 August and flying out of the country on the same day.
They leave China on 22 August to return home.
The sailors are Point High School's Bradon Kretzmann and James Bull, Sao Bras High School's Waydon Goliath and former Point learner Tammy Holden.
Tammy (19) will be at the championships as the boys' coach and will also compete herself.
The Topper is a small boat, having one design, manufactured according to the same specifications all over the world. It is especially suitable for young sailors or sailors with a light body weight. The sailors will not be taking their own boats, but will use chartered boats provided at the Longcheer Yacht Club in Shenzhen, where the championship is taking place.
More than 20 countries from five continents will be competing. It will be the largest Topper world championship ever, with 264 entries.
The sailors compete in an open, mixed category, with adults and children of all ages competing.
The criterium is that their weight must be light enough to sail the small boat.
"None of the boys has been overseas before. This is the boys' first world championship so they are extremely excited. It will be a life-changing event," said Holden, a veteran who has sailed in a few world championships. She has just returned to Mossel Bay from a stint of sailing in Greece.
