RUGBY NEWS - The Graaff-Reinetter, Andrew Fischer led the Guangzhou Rams to glory against the Shenzhen Dragons in the All-China Champions Cup on Saturday 20 May.
Fischer matriculated from Union High School in 2011 and received a swimming bursary which led him to study in the United States.
The All-China Cup is the premier rugby competition, and almost half of the Rams team was made up of South Africans.
Fischer scored the opening try in a thrilling match where the lead changed four times. The Rams beat the Dragons 22 - 17, winning the match with a splendid try in the final seconds of the game.
Earlier this year the Rams knocked the reigning champions, the Shanghai RFC, out of the competition in the semi-finals. Fischer scored in this match too.
Fischer, playing at open-side flank, had a storming match in windy and humid conditions. "The team is over the moon at the victory. This is the biggest triumph in the 25 year history of our club," says Fischer. According to him, the All-China Cup competition is in its 9th year. The historic Shanghai RFC, founded in 1881, won the Cup for the first eight years of the competition.
Andrew, his wife Nayoung, and 6-month-old son JoshCay will be visiting Graaff-Reinet for a few weeks in June, before heading back to China.
