GARDEN ROUTE | KAROO NEWS - At this year’s 13th Klein Karoo Street Mile on Saturday, 17 December, the spectators were treated to exciting races, with remarkably good performances.
In the Ladies' Open event, 20-year-old newcomer Charné Swart, a medical student from the University of Pretoria, pulled clear from Murray and Roberts club stalwart Kesa Molotsane, with 400 metres left, to win in 4:37,26.
Swart’s time was less than one second outside Carina Viljoen's course record of 4:36,33.
This holds promise for the youngster, who is better known as an 800m runner.
Stephany Pedro (20), now running for North West University and formerly from George, finished in a credible fourth position.
During the Men’s Open, the athletes had to contend with a torrential downpour and a stiff headwind. The first three places were all taken by newcomers to the event.
Three-times national champion over the 1 500m, Nkosinathi Sibiya (University of Johannesburg), crossed the line first in a credible 3:59,19. He was challenged by Christopher Swart (North West University), who finished second in 4:00,19, and Bafana Mnyakeni (University of the Free State), third in 4:01,25.
The Eden Street Mile Series aim of developing new talent was met, with athletes from rural towns taking podium positions.
The action moved to the Swartberg Track Miles today, Monday, 19 December, and finishes in Hartenbos on 21 December. Visit www.edenmiles.co.za for more information.
