MOSSEL BAY BODYBUILDING NEWS - The Southern Cape Spring Classic bodybuilding tournament is taking place as part of the Mossel Bay Sport and Recreation Festival on 5 October at the Diaz Hotel.
The Sport and Recreation Festival is from 14 September to 12 October.
The Spring Classic is an International Bodybuilding and Fitness Federation (IBFF) Africa event.
Mossel Bay's very own Fitness over 40 IBFF SA champ and reigning World Champion Rochelle Smit will be hosting the event. Last month she had three radio slots, together with Mossel Bay Municipality spokesperson Colin Puren, promoting the Sport Festival and the Spring Classic. These were on SFM, Heartbeat FM and Eden FM.
Smit said: "We are expecting more than 100 athletes and 500 supporters."
She is passionate about the sport and would like to "develop the art of bodybuilding" in her community, she says.
"Our aim is to develop the talent in the previously disadvantaged communities. So many are willing but lack the skill and funds. Athletes sleep in police stations during tournaments as they do not have the funds for accommodation. We must invest in the development of the enormous talent in the township and rural communities."
Smit says: "Depending on the support and funds received the Spring Classic could be implemented as a yearly event. Let us stand together and promote sports development and uplift our community."
Smit appeals to businesses or individuals to make use of sponsorship opportunities.
