On Saturday, March 1, NMMU outplayed the defending champion, which played in its fifth consecutive final, and recorded a comprehensive seven wicket victory. It was the new champion's first season in the Premier League after the NMMU lads won the Promotion League in 2012/13.
Union Stars won the toss and elected to bat first and a great bowling performance by the captain, Lyndon Volkwyn, who finished with figures of 5/26 in 9 overs, put huge pressure on the strong Union Stars batting line-up. Volkwyn was well supported by Niel Hornbuckle (1/24 in 10 overs) who bowled a tight spell. Pieter Stuurman (71; 81 balls, 2x6, 7x4) played a great knock for Union Stars and was involved in a partnership of 114 runs for the seventh wicket with Leroi Bredenkamp (38; 2x4). Erinn Ewerts also added a valuable contribution (37; 1x6, 3x4) to ensure a total of 209 (48.3 overs).
Two match winning partnerships in the NMMU innings paved the way to victory. Hanno Kotze (51; 2x6, 2x4) together with Ruan Stander (33; 4x4) added 86 runs for the second wicket, but it was an unbroken partnership of 119 runs for the fourth wicket between Glen Addicot (50*; 1x6, 5x4) and Patrick Hancock (66; 5x6, 4x4) that took NMMU over the line as it reached the winning target (214/3) with 5 overs to spare.
