GARDEN ROUTE DISTRICT CRICKET NEWS - All club cricket in the South Western Districts has been cancelled.
The first matches were scheduled for tomorrow, Saturday 6 March, but the Covid-19 pandemic has had the last say.
According to SWD Cricket chief executive officer Albertus Kennedy, the majority of the clubs voted in favour of the cancellation of the planned leagues.
"A transparent process was followed and it was evident the risks and limited capacities to ensure the safety of players were too big an issue," he said.
The members' council of SWD Cricket, by means of an ordinary round robin resolution, voted for the cancellation of the planned leagues of SWD Cricket for the 2020/21 season.
The planned league competition was tabled at a committee meeting of SWD Cricket on 3 February and clubs were invited to participate in a survey.
The questions in the survey related to the capacity of clubs to properly train and/or prepare for the planned competition starting on 6 March, the capacity of clubs to ensure and guarantee that Covid-19 return to train/play protocols would be adhered to, their capacity to ensure and guarantee that travelling to and from a venue would be in accordance with Covid-19 return to train/play protocols and the availability of facilities for scheduling fixtures during the month of March.
Based on the concept "competition" and set protocol requirements, the clubs were also requested to respond on whether they would be able to accept responsibility and liability for and ensure the safety of all participants.
