SPORT NEWS AND VIDEO - Ruben Burger (31) of Mossel Bay came sixth in the 96kg weightlifting event at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, United Kingdom, on Tuesday, 2 August.
Burger described the Games as "a once-in-a-lifetime event".
He says, although he is not happy with his performance on the day, the experience gained was tremendous.
"Things don't always work out as planned, but one learns and builds on the experience gained, to do better at the next competition."
Burger moves up to the 102kg weightlifting category, in which he has to qualify for the Paris Olympic Games. The first qualifying event is at the World Championships at Bogota, Columbia, at the end of the year.
Burger and his family will be in Birmingham until 8 August. He is looking forward to being a tourist for a few days, but will still be training in between sightseeing, until he flies back to South Africa. He is the owner of the Eden Fitness and CrossFit Charisma gym in Mossel Bay.
