MOSSEL BAY NEWS - Bernhard Siebrits from Eden represented South Africa at the recent Wold Triathle Championships in St Petersburg, Florida (USA).
He competed against the best athletes in the world in this high-paced run/shoot/swim event and achived a commendable fourth place to add to his list of accolades for this season.
More than 420 athletes from 33 countries gathered in Florida.
The gold medals were shared among numerous nations, with world titles going to Japan, Egypt, Guatemala, France and South Africa as well as Kazakhstan and Great Britain, who were especially strong in the masters categories.
Bernhard qualified and received Western Cape provincial colours at the biathle champs in Bredasdorp on 18 May. He received a silver medal in the grandmaster division.
His hard work was rewarded as the best newcomer in the triathle division and top biathle achiever in the 60+ age category at the Eden awards on 5 October.
Triathle, an Olympic event, is a combination of continuous shooting, swimming and running. Athletes run 20m to the laser shooting station and shoot and aim to hit five targets or wait 50 seconds before they may leave to enter the transition area for a shoe change.
The athletes need to swim the appropriate distance. They then enter the transition area again for a shoe change. Four laps of running need to be completed before crossing the finish line. Like the triathle, biathle is a continuous run-swim-run event.
