In August 2018, plans for a repair operation on the Port of Mossel Bay were outlined by the Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA). Around the month of December, the TNPA’S dredging services division sent one of its trailing suction hopper dredgers, Isandlwana, to Mossel Bay to take care of the port’s entrance.
Transnet noted several positive outcomes of the dredging operation. They included the fact that an entrance channel would be constructed with the appropriate depth, and that any barriers to easy navigation into the port would be removed.
Plans for a repair operation were put into action in preparation for an oil drilling expedition, overseen by petroleum refinement company Total, taking place over the period of time between December 2018 and March 2019. Shadrack Tshikalange, manager of the Port of Mossel Bay, noted TNPA’s support and appreciation for initiative, whose planned outcomes will hopefully lead to the discovery of what Operation Phakisa describes as the economic potential of South Africa’s oceans.
Operation Phakisa is a multifaceted government initiative that focuses on development within numerous sectors. Included amongst its various programmes is Oceans Economy. It’s aforementioned economic aim is partly a means to generate more employment opportunities in South Africa.
With programmes such as these being implemented, and with improvements being made to areas that already hold so much aesthetic value, such as Mossel Bay, it’s easy to foresee the creation of more jobs, as well as greater demand for more property, in those areas.
