The suspect was arrested in the Hillcrest area after police received information regarding her whereabouts. Police spokesman, Lt Col Thulani Zwane said that on August 13, 2016, the victim was admitted at a Durban hospital after giving birth to her baby boy.
She was approached by the suspect, who offered to assist her as the victim’s family reportedly did not want to fetch the victim from hospital.
“The victim and the suspect left the hospital and proceeded to Durban where the suspect offered food to her. Later on, the suspect allegedly provided money to the victim and asked her to purchase airtime while she waited with the baby at a taxi rank,” explained Lt Col Zwane.
When the victim returned, she noticed that both her baby and the suspect were missing. A case of child stealing was opened at the Durban Central police station for further investigation.
