NATIONAL NEWS - Western Cape Community Safety MEC Dan Plato says that 80% of gender-based violence is committed by someone close to the victim, making it difficult to police the issue.
Plato was part of the Democratic Alliance Women’s Network dialogue on the issue in Nyanga over the weekend.
There has been a surge in reported violence against women and children, with at least 24 children being murdered since the beginning of the year.
Plato adds that they are addressing complaints from women over the lack of support for victims.
"For instance, I had to write a letter to the provincial commissioner after complaints that women were told to come back to police stations the next day. No, when it comes to women and children there needs to be immediate assistance."
