Residents are demanding homes which they were allegedly promised by the City of Joburg.
The houses they are demanding are situated in the Fleurhof housing project where 400 units are still lying vacant.
JMPD spokesperson Wayne Minaar says the protest is violent.
"It’s totally non-accessible, so Main Reef Road must be avoided at all costs this morning. There has been reports of cars being stolen so it’s not safe for motorists to drive past Riverlea."
DA councillor, Basil Douglas, says residents are upset because they qualify to access the housing and believe they are being overlooked.
"At this stage the people are very unhappy because they qualify, they were promised 400 houses, they haven’t been relocated. Only 80 have been taken from there."
