Hawks expect more arrests in diamond smuggling case

NATIONAL NEWS - The Hawks in the Northern Cape say they expect to make more arrests regarding an illegal diamond smuggling syndicate in the Springbok region.

On Monday, two alleged kingpins appeared before the Springbok Magistrates Court on charges of dealing and possessing uncut diamonds.

They were found in possession of 123 diamonds worth more than R1.7 million.

Spokesperson Philani Nkwalase says more arrests are expected.

“They illegally acquired diamonds which would eventually be exported out of the country. About 123 diamond carats worth more than R1.7 million were recovered.”
