The popularity of larger, higher vehicles also shows that virtually everybody really, really needs one of these toys. To be fair, justification is not hard with the state of the roads and crime statistics.
From their side the manufacturers are doing their best with tempting vehicles - from a full-sized mini-tank for he-men to the compact, stylish version for mum and the kids. There is literally a vehicle for everyone - whether you are shopping at entry-level and value or the luxurious premium segment with bling, electronics and all creature comforts.
The Peugeot 2008 1,6 VTI Allure is offered at R269 900 - aiming for good value, comfort and economy. Peugeot offers only one derivative and this vehicle is the French manufacturer's first entry into this fast growing segment.
STYLING
The 2008 is based on the same platform as the 208 hatchback, so it is compact. It has a pleasing overall design and clear defining lines from back to front.
Despite its compact outside look, it is roomy inside with a good sized boot that holds 360-litres. The split rear bench seat folds down completely for a flat cargo area.
The Allure trim is a mix of genuine leather and comfortable cloth with visual appeal. The quality of the materials and the level of specifications are good, including a full-colour touch screen display for access to all the infotainment offerings. There is also integrated satellite navigation, Bluetooth-powered telephone connectivity and audio streaming, USB and auxiliary audio inputs, a trip computer and an FM/AM receiver with multiple speakers to go with air conditioning, power windows and power steering. The steering wheel and seating have to be put up correctly, or the steering wheel blocks some of the driving controls.
DRIVING
The gearbox proved easy to operate and the car is ideal for family trips and daily errands. The published fuel consumption is a good 7,0-litres per 100km. Drive to the front wheels is via a five-speed manual gearbox and Peugeot's standard Grip Control system optimises traction control settings for a variety of conditions.
