MOTORING NEWS - Part of Land Rover's celebrations of its 70th anniversary was marked with a 70-car parade at the recently concluded Goodwood Festival of Speed to pay homage to the brand's British heritage. The first Land Rovers were built just after the Second World War. At the time of its 50th anniversary, it was estimated that more than two-thirds of all these workhorses ever manufactured were still in regular or daily use.
Other festivities earlier in the year included a mass gathering of Land Rovers in June, in Germany. To celebrate, 632 vehicles set a new Guinness World Record in Bad Kissingen, Bavaria, for the largest ever parade of Land Rovers.
More than 1 500 customers and fans joined the record-breaking 7,4km parade, beating the record of 516 Land Rovers set in Portugal in 2014. The Bad Kissingen parade featured a wide range of models including many classic Defender models. They were accompanied by Land Rover Discovery, Discovery Sport and Freelander models and the complete Range Rover line-up: Range Rover, Range Rover Sport, Evoque and Velar.
Elsewhere in the UK, Land Rover and the London Design Museum are inviting visitors to take a seat to commemorate 70 years of the Land Rover brand.
The atrium seating at the London museum has been re-upholstered with 18 original materials used in Land Rovers from 1948 to 2018 for a Material Innovation installation.
The installation includes the original fabric from the first Land Rover (1948), the cloth designed with Sir Paul Smith for his special edition Land Rover Defender (2015) and an innovative, sustainable textile developed by Kvadrat for the Range Rover Velar (2017) as a premium alternative to leather.
